When I started working with slate, I began experimenting with the material and unearthed a truth to humanity.

Slate has a natural beauty, both masculine and feminine. When adding my personal touch to this substance, I discovered that it is very forgiving. When I would make a mistake, I could easily erase it and start fresh. I also discovered that alone, it is fragile but when pieces are combined, it gains strength.

Like slate, we are fragile when alone. Breakable at times. We don't often acknowledge this truth as weakness is seen as a bad flaw. In unification, we are strong. If we are compassionate and kind to each other and accept that we need each other, we grow in beauty and strength.

Through my eyes, my art is symbolic of the need to be kind to each other. We never truly know what it is like to walk in another's shoes but we know how it is to walk in our own. Be compassionate to your neighbor for you don't know what their perils may be and how much your kindness can help them with their journey.
